Velma Carey:

Velma Carey has been a civil rights activist for years and is an historian of the Springfield Race Riot of 1908. Velma has broken hiring barriers, from the time when she was the first black salesclerk at Myers Brothers Department Store to her many years as personnel director at UIS. She co-owned Springfield’s first ethnic bookstore.
