Field Report founder and frontman Chris Porterfield assumed his music career was over after he left the Wisconsin band DeYarmond Edison, which also featured Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and several current members of Megafaun. Following the band's 2006 breakup, Porterfield started writing music for the first time, taking years to hone his skills.
Field Report finally recorded its meticulously crafted songs, which recall the works of Paul Simon and Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen.
The band has received much praise. According to Billboard Magazine, "The Counting Crows, Emmylou Harris, and Aimee Mann each invited Field Report to open shows for them. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that "The buzz leading up to Field Report's self-titled debut album has been louder than the music of this six-piece Milwaukee folk band, with Rolling Stone, NPR, Pitchfork and Time already writing raves. The Band includes Nick Berg:keyboards and backing vocals, Travis Whitty: bass and backing vocals, Jeff Mitchell: baritone guitar and backing vocals, Damian Strigens:drums, Ben Lester:pedal steel, Shane Leonard:drums, fiddle, banjo, backing vocals
